Turkish Clothing in South Africa

Clothing Made in China

Top Brands Made in China

More than 89% of clothing found in South Africa is manufactured in China.

As born and bred South Africans, we mostly do not really realise or care that just about every clothing store in South Africa either carries Chinese branded clothing or has their specific label of clothing manufactured in China.

Having travelled to China on various occasions, this did not really worry me much as I personally realised that while China is probably best known for it’s poor quality and is notorious for it’s human rights violations, there are a few very high quality manufacturing facilities available which do produce some fantastic clothing.

However, when I started to travel to Ukraine, one thing that did stand out to me was that the clothing that the average people wore for everyday seemed to be of a much higher quality and style than what us South Africans are used to.

It is not that the people in Ukraine are out buying designer outfits to wear everyday as the average income in Ukraine is far below that of South Africa and as such the average “Joe” on the street simply can not afford expensive designer outfits.

The answer came fairly soon when I discovered that very little of the clothing available in Ukraine came from China. Ukraine lies in close proximity to Turkey and the majority of the clothing available in the markets and in the local stores is made in Turkey.

I think that as South Africans, the only sort of real experience that we have had of Turkish Clothing has been that of the occasional leather jacket that has been manufactured in turkey and somehow found it’s way to the South African Retail stores shelves.

Boy have we been missing out. Turkish Jeans are simply in a class of their own when it comes to fabric quality, style, comfort and durability. The minute that you first touch the denim material, you straight away realise that there is something different, a quality that we are not accustomed to.

100% Cotton Top from Turkey

Turkey is a key cotton growing area and so the cotton raw material used in their clothing is of exceptional quality and mostly the garments are 100% pure cotton – not synthetics or cotton mixtures like the garments that come from China and to which we are accustomed.

The Photo on the left is an example of a high quality 100% cotton ladies top manufactured in Turkey.

The real difference between this top and a “Made in China” ladies top comes when you touch the garment and try it on. The fit is perfect and the once on, you simply do not want to take it off again.

Turkish Clothing in South Africa

As a result of the high quality clothing that we found which originated from Turkey, we at Ruslana Clothing decided that we are going to make every effort possible to introduce Turkish Clothing to the South African Market.

As as small and humble beginning, we have a small selection of Turkish Jeans, Denim jackets, and ladies tops which are manufactured by Vigoss in Turkey.

Vigoss is a high quality brand which has really taken the market in both Europe and USA with most buyers commenting on just how comfortable the Vigoss Brand is.

As time progresses we hope to be bringing a whole lot more Turkish Clothing into South Africa and hopefully you will soon be as hooked on Turkish quality as we are.

Nude Fashion Racialistic

Nude fashion is one of the great hits of the runway this year, but there is one small itsy weeny tiny problem with nude fashions in South Africa – They are racialistic.

nude fashion

Nude Fashion

Nude fashion is the practice of wearing pale pinks and flesh coloured clothes so that one has to look twice to see whether you are really wearing clothing or not.

However, since traditional nude colours are matched to the white skin only, it is definitely a racialist fashion that prejudices the people who were not fortunate enough to be given a light skin colour at birth.

Since South Africa is predominately black and has suffered from years of apartheid, anything that may slightly prejudice the darker skins stands a good chance of being banned outright.

Will nude fashion be banned in South Africa due to the racialistic undertones that it imparts, or will nude fashion colour definitions be changed in South Africa so that nude tones now include all darker browns and blacks as well.

Quality Ladies Tops from Vigoss Turkey

When it comes to the quality of a ladies top, it all boils down to 2 factors, the material used and the style cut that makes it fit.

Susann Lau, the top fashion blogger once wrote, ” if you touch a garment and the feel of it makes you want to hold it for just a little more than a second, then it is a keeper.”

These incredible ladies tops from Vigoss, are slightly more than that. Once you put them on you never want to take them off again.

Super style and comfort.

Please excuse the slight Blur on the picture but our camera was not performing properly when we took the photo, or maybe it was just the camera man.

Studs in Fashion

No, not the type of studs you find advertised in the small classified section of the newspapers, who promise to take care of your every need (for a not so small fee), but rather the type of studs that you find decorating leather or leather touch fashion accessories.

Black bag with stud decoration

Stylish Black bag decorated with studs.

No Need for you to go out hunting for leather jackets adorned with studs. Simply add a stylish fashion handbag, like the one above,  to any of your outfits as a great accessory, and you achieve the look of style that these studded accessories afford.

One thing that I absolutely love about this handbag is the delicate mixture of tomboy in the form of the brass stud decoration, combined with the soft feminine touch of the leaf decoration in squares around the studs.

Although the stud look really comes to the forefront when accompanied by a sultry look in double denim, this elegant handbag can match almost any outfit, from daily work clothes, to ultra casual and even some pretty formal evening wear.

Some great news, we have some stock of Vigoss Jeans and Vigoss denim jackets. Vigoss is a name associated with quality and style from Turkey. Although Vigoss jeans are not yet well known in South Africa, it will only be a matter of time.

Double Denim is Back

Double Denim, the art of wearing two distinctive denim items together, is back in high fashion with many of the celebs successfully or unsuccessfully endorsing the look.

Why the art of Double Denim? Simply said, putting two pieces of denim together into a look can either be a huge hit or a disaster, depending on your choices.

The success of the double denim look depends hugely on the match that you create. Denim should ideally be contrasting and the picture on the left shows how Ashley Olsen manages to pull of the look by wearing darker jeans, which make her look thinner, and a beautiful denim top that is slightly revealing.

The contrasting black handbag straps with the large black sunglasses break the denim and add to the style.

Do not use thick waist belts to try to break the look as it ultimately tends to make the double denim look a total disaster.

The second acceptable double denim combination is totally matching denim fabrics. The denim should either be a total

match or total contrast in order to successfully create the double denim look.

I personally favour the contrasting look but matching can also be very attractive.

Here Elle Mac Pherson manages to pull it of by using matching denim , a big belt buckle to break the denim, and a scarf tucked into the top.

Avoid wearing cowboy style boots and rather maintain a touch of elegance to the look by wearing peep toe flat shoes or other elegant flat shoes to fully compliment the outfit.

Double denim is hot fashion, comfortable and durable, so rush out and grab one of the great Vigoss Jeans denim tops, or even a nice denim handbag,  to compliment the jeans that you already have, and go knock them dead with your great new double denim look.

Caitlin – Face of the Future.

Caitlin Botha
A Natural look.

Caitlin Botha is a real natural when it comes to photographic qualities, modelling and fashion.

At the age of 5 she is already known for her good choice of clothing and has a reputation at the local stores for her fashion choices. One local fashion store owner admits that she makes many of her clothing stock purchases based upon what Caitlin likes or does not like when she visits the store. Not bad for a 5 year old to start influencing local fashion.

The photo’s of Caitlin shown here are all natural, self posed photo’s of her playing around in everyday life. I can not wait to see what she will look like one day in a professional photo shoot.

Masculine and Feminine Combined.

This post is inspired by a photo from the Sartorialist blog. Unfortunately, due to copyrights, I can not reproduce the photo but you can check the photo here.

In the photo is a very subtle mix of the feminine florals in the mini skirt/dress that the girl is wearing, combined with masculine boots and and a masculine winter shirt worn as a jacket.

The effect is that of “I am all girl, but ready to venture into a man’s world,” and the total look is bound to get heads turning.

Fashion has no limits, is a lot of imagination and playing with combinations- sometimes you get it right and at other times you don’t, but unless you play around with combinations, you will never know if you are right or wrong.

Houseboy Uniforms

Sorry But No Photo. I have spent a couple of hours and over 100mb of airtime trying to find a suitable photo to match this entry – but alas – none could be found.

Last weekend, while out and about at a shopping centre ( yes, we stil cram in some shopping centre experiences into our busy life) I noticed a black family out and shopping.

“Well so what,” you are probably saying, “This is South Africa and wherever you go, you are going to bump into black families doing their shopping!”

This family was a little different. The wife and children were fairly well dressed with boutique style clothing and carried themselves well. However, the big surprise came in what the obviously successful and at a guess, fairly upmarket husband was wearing.

The Husband looked absolutely stunning in his “Houseboy Uniform!” Remember those old uniforms of Khaki long shorts with matching khaki tops that the black male domestic workers used to wear in old South Africa. Well the Husband was out and about wearing this symbol of the apartheid years.

Unfortunately I did not have a camera with me else I would have approached the man and taken a photo accompanied with a couple of words from him as to his choice of outfits. However, I must say that he really looked good in the uniform. It was by no means demeaning but rather seemed to improve and compliment his appearance.

Going back many years, there was astage in about 1974, when younger white youth suddenly started wearing theses exact same “Houseboy” uniforms as a fashion statement. They are comfortable, fairly stylish and very different and of course 100% South African. They are part of the S.A Culture.

Are these ”Houseboy Uniforms” going to make a fashion comeback. I think I am going to get me one for the days when I am forced to transform myself from the busy internet geek to “Garden Boy.”

Who Knows – Maybe we will even see the old “Safari Suit” rising back into fashion again as well!
